January 1, 1998 FACULTY James Solt (84) Monterey County Herald, CA Jan 4, 1998 pA4 James Solt, a former Pacific Grove resident, died Thursday at his home in Calistoga. He was 84. Born April 26, 1913, in Budapest, Hungary, he had lived on the Monterey Peninsula from 1944 until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of the Hungarian cavalry and the Merchant marines before coming to the United States in 1937. His service in the U.S. Army included a tour of duty at Fort Ord in 1944. He remained in the Monterey area after leaving the Army. He established a reputation as an active member of the Carmel art community and was a longtime member of that city's Arts Association. Mr. Solt received a bachelor's degree in education from San Jose State University and a master's degree in education from Stanford University. He taught mathematics and special education at Pacific Grove Junior High School for many years. He retired from teaching in 1979 after having spent several years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Sierra Leone. He is survived by a daughter, Paulette Solt of San Francisco; a son, Peter Solt of Calistoga; two stepsons, Jim Zimmerman of San Francisco and Ted Nash of Medford, N.J.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Helena Catholic Church, St. Helena. The family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to the American Friends Service Committee. |
