FACULTY Monterey County Herald (online ed.), CA April 26, 2009 June 3, 1917 ~ April 21, 2009 PACIFIC GROVE - Major Arnold Kohn, U.S.A., Ret., died in his home on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, after a brief illness. He was 92 years old. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 3, 1917, Maj. Kohn had numerous interests which he pursued throughout his long and productive life. He attended New York University, working towards a degree in Civil Engineering, until he made the decision to serve his country and enlisted in the U.S. Army at the beginning of World War II. After a 20-year military career which included postings at Ft. Hunt, Virginia, and the Pentagon, and in Europe and the Orient, he "retired" and went on to continue his education. He began a second career as a teacher at Pacific Grove High School where he initially taught several languages including Chinese and later went on to create and oversee an Individualized Study Program. Maj. Kohn was a devoted husband to his wife of 62 years, Helen, and a beloved father to his daughters, Adrienne (Crowell) and Merry (Buvia). He was also greatly loved and respected by his sons-in-law, Ronald Crowell and Rick Buvia, and grandson, Gregory Crowell. He was a man of impeccable values who never failed to model them to his family by the manner in which he lived his life. His ability to deal with even the most tragic of circumstances with great dignity and compassion along with a wonderful wry sense of humor inspired everyone who knew him. He will be sadly missed. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Maj. and Mrs. Kohn's caregiver, Yong Hall. At Maj. Kohn's request, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make a donation to the charity of your choice. "Do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest." ~ Mark Twain If you would like to send your condolences to the family, please do so in care of: peacefulwatersedge@yahoo.com. |
