FACULTY Ralph E. "Coach Pappy" Johnson (60) February 28, 1968 Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA Feb. 28, 1968 p2 Ralph E. "Coach" Johnson, a well-loved member of the Pacific Grove High School faculty since 1931, died this morning in a local hospital after a period of failing health. Mr. Johnson was born in Los Angeles April 25, 1907, and was graduated from Long Beach High School. Following his graduation from Santa Barbara State College in 1931 he joined the Pacific Grove school system. His first assignment was at the Robert Down Elementary School, and then from 1936 to 1959 he taught at Pacific Grove High School in the athletic department and served as assistant football coach. In 1959, Mr. Johnson went to paris, France, where he taught in U.S. Army overseas schools, returning to head the industrial arts department at Pacific Grove High in 1961. In 1965 he returned to France and Germany as teacher in U.S. Air Force overseas department at Hahn Air Force Base. He returned to Pacific Grove last October when he became ill. He is survived by his wife, Mildred H. Johnson of Pacific Grove; two sons, Donald R. Johnson of Reseda and Richard R. Johnson of Pacifica; and eight grandsons. Private family services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Little Chapel by-the-Sea with the Rev. K. Fillmore Gray of the Alamo Methodist Church officiating. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Contributions in his memory may be made to the scholarship fund of Pacific Grove High School.
