March 31, 2010 FACULTY Frederick Marvin Greaves (78) Salinas Californian, CA on April 8, 2010 SALINAS Frederick M. Greaves, 78, of Salinas a retired schoolteacher, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at his Salinas home after a brief illness. He was born July 12, 1931, in Hayward, California and had lived in Monterey County since 1963. Mr. Greaves graduated from Hayward Union High School in 1949 and earned his Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from San Francisco State University. Mr. Greaves was an enlisted man in the U.S. Army during the Korean War period. He worked for the Salinas Union High School District for 32 years as both a teacher and research assistant. After his retirement, he was able to realize his passion for travel by serving as a tour leader for the travel group People to People and went to Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Through the Salinas Chamber of Commerce he went to China. He also took many trips on his own to Ashland, Oregon for the Shakespeare Festival and to Canada to his favorite city, Victoria, BC. An avid reader and scholar, he enjoyed researching his family genealogy and in his later years he found much happiness with his Inter-Faith study group at Temple Beth El. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, First Presbyterian Church, the Alamo Club, American Legion Post 31, Sons in Retirement Branch 89, Salinas Elks Lodge 614 and Mended Hearts - Salinas Valley Chapter 17. He will be greatly missed by his good friend Helen Grow of Salinas. Survivors: Daughter, Gretchen Lira and son-in-law Marc Lira of Burbank, CA; son Alexander Greaves of Bremerton, WA; and grandsons Nicholas Lira and Dashiell Lira of Burbank, CA. Memorial Services: Will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W.
