December 4, 1989 FACULTY (1962-1984) Robert Leslie Grate (63) Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA Dec 4, 1989 Robert Leslie Grate, a retired Pacific Grove High School teacher, died Monday at Chico Burn Center. He was 63. Born Jan. 2, 1925 in Santa Monica, Mr. Grate had lived in Monterey County for more than 27 years. While at Pacific Grove High for 22 years, he taught history and driver’s education and was junior varsity football coach. Mr. Grate also taught California history at Monterey Peninsula College and San Jose tat University for several years. A founding member of the Old Monterey Preservation Society, Mr. Grate was also active in Little League baseball. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a bachelor’s degree, from Fresno State University with a master’s degree and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Mr. Grate served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Frances; two sons, Leslie of Santa Cruz, and Justus of Los Angeles; his mother, Olive Pinkerton of Santa Monica; and a sister, JoAnne Osterhout of Los Angeles. At his request, cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Family members request that any memorial contributions be made to the Pacific Grove High School Social Science Department or the Old Monterey Preservation Society.
