June 3, 2015 FACULTY Jack Lawrence Gallaher (87) Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA June 2015 Jack Lawrence Gallaher June 11, 1927 ' June 3, 2015 Marina, CA Born in Walla Walla, Washington, to Gladys and Rev. Byron Gallaher, The family moved every three to four years due to his father’s work.
He graduated from Columbia High School in White Salmon, Washington in June 1945. Jack joined the Marine Corps on June 1, 1945. He spent 30 months in China with the China Marines. He was a combat photographer and correspondent.
After leaving the Marine Corps in 1945, he enrolled in the University of Puget Sound and earned a BA in Literature, Journalism, Composition/Speech and Drama. While getting his degree, he worked as a radio announcer, newsman and writer.
While in college, he met and married Suzanne West in 1953. They moved to California so that Jack could attend Stanford University’s Radio/Television Summer Institute. While working at KCBS, Jack decided he wanted to teach and enrolled at San Francisco State University. With a teaching credential he found work teaching at Pacific Grove High School.
Wanting to further his education, he obtained a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration at San Jose State University. Several years later, he went back and earned and MS in Mass Communication. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Tau Alpha.
He taught for 29 years and retired in 1989. After retirement, he joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Monterey. He is survived by his wife Suzanne and his children: Patricia Rogers (Terrance), Timothy Gallaher (Lan) and Brenna Gallaher (Anthony); 7 grandchildren and 2 greatgrandchildren; a sister Martha Jane Bell and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, June 20, 2015, 2 pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Monterey. With thanks to Carmel Hills Care Center and all the wonderful people for their loving care of Jack. Remembrances can be made to any charity of your choice. |
