November 23, 1994 FACULTY Maude Marian Smith (91) Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA Nov. 26, 1994 p4A Maude Marian Smith, 91, of Monterey, a retired teacher, died Wednesday at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. She was born Nov. 17, 1903, in Campbell. She earned her teaching credential from San Jose State University and began teaching in 1927 at Redwood School on the Big Sur coast, near Lucia. She then taught briefly at nearby Pacific Valley School and later at Del Monte School in Monterey. Most of her teaching career was at Robert Down School in Pacific Grove from which she retired in 1968. Following her retirement, Ms. Smith continued to be active in many hobbies, including gardening, writing poetry, calligraphy and working with semiprecious stones. She was especially active in the Carmel Valley Gem and Mineral Society, traveling with her sister and other club members to many sites in the Western states, prospecting for raw stones. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and a life member of the Sierra Club. Ms. Smith is survived by a sister, Ada Smith of Monterey, and three nephews who lived with her for many years, Gene Harlan of Twain Harte, Don Harlan of Big Sur and Stanley Harlan of Monterey. At her request, no ser vices will be held. Following cremation, the ashes will be scattered at sea. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. |
