March 24, 1948 ~ September 30, 2014 MOSS LANDING, CA
William "Bill" Wardle passed away in his home in Moss Landing, CA on September 30, 2014, surrounded by the love of his family. Bill was born in Munich, Germany in 1948 to Lt. Col. Clarence "Buck" and Thelma "Sally" Wardle. The family returned to the states, stationed at Fort Ord and settled in Pacific Grove, CA. Bill attended all of his school years in Pacific Grove.
All of the Wardle children were encouraged to join the armed services and Bill chose the Coast Guard, ultimately serving proudly for 21 and a half years. Bill joined the Coast Guard in July of 1966. He served in Vietnam in 1968 and on the Coast Guard Cutter Winona and retired in Hickman, KY as Boatswain's Mate Master Chief in December of 1987.
At the time of retiring, Bill moved back to Pacific Grove and began working for the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, MBARI. He did so for 15 years, advancing from deck hand to Captain. He was very proud to help facilitate and be a part of ocean science advancement.
Bill moved to Moss Landing in 1991 to a quaint Quonset hut that fit his style. His passions were shown through his love of rescuing Dobermans, rebuilding cars, motorcycles and boats, making art of all kinds, and always creatively repairing what needed mending. He loved his family days at home and had a never-ending to-do list. He loved taking drives and feeling the wind in his hair.
Bill is survived by his wife, Patricia; his first wife, Kathleen, the mother of his three daughters, Onyon of Copperopolis, Georgina of Moss Landing and Dawn who went to heaven in 2006. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Zoe (PFC, USMC), Eva, Christopher and Alana.
All throughout his adult life, Bill's greatest joy was time spent with his family, extended family and friends. His charming smile, commanding voice and intriguing eyes will be remembered and missed by many.
Services will be held at The Harbor Chapel, 620 Dolan Road, Moss Landing, CA at one in the afternoon on October 18th, followed by a Celebration of Life at The Haute Enchilada, 7902 Moss Landing Road, Moss Landing, CA.
