COUNSELOR Ruth Roberta Young

Ruth Roberta Young, born on January 4, 1926, in Charlotte, Michigan, the beloved daughter of Floyd and Eva Queen Richards, passed away February 4, 2006. Ruth grew up in California, living in San Francisco, San Juan Bautista, Hollister and Pacific Grove. 3

She graduated from Hollister High School and Stanford University. Her love of working with and teaching children made her decide on her career as a teacher and counselor. She taught in San Juan Bautista and Salinas, then Ruth and her mother moved to Pacific Grove, where she was a vice principal at Robert H. Down School.

In 1953, she met the love of her life, George E. Young, Jr., a lieutenant in the US Navy. They married at the Church of the Wayfarer in July of 1953 and moved away from the peninsula.

They returned to Pacific Grove in 1957 and Ruth went back to teaching. She taught at Lighthouse and Forest Grove Elementary Schools before transferring to the high school in 1963 to become one of the counselors. She really enjoyed counseling and became a "second mother" to many students. She liked seeing her former students in the community as business people, doctors, lawyers and dentists. She worked in schools for 28 years and retired in 1986.

She was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1989 and had problems moving, particularly in the last few years. Ruth leaves her husband, George; their children: John and wife Betty of Killeen, Texas; James of Monterey; Susan of Rockaway Beach, Oregon; George III and wife Martha , and grandchildren, Andrew and Traci all of Gilroy, California and many nephews and nieces.

Ruth loved spending time with her family. She had a lot of special memories playing golf with her husband, her children and her grandson. She could even brag that she made a "hole-in-one" on three different courses. Ruth's joy of teaching, working with others and marine life, inspired her to be in the first volunteer guide class at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. She was a shift captain. She spent 1,624 hours working as a guide and educating the visitor to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. She served on the Pacific Grove Recreation Board for twelve years.

Donations can be made to the "Ruth R. Young Scholarship Fund" for Pacific Grove High School students who will be attending Monterey Peninsula College. Checks can be sent to the Monterey Peninsula College Trust Fund, 980 Fremont, Monterey, CA 93940. The Paul Mortuary in charge of arrangements. Published in the Monterey Herald on 2/7/2006.
