December 7, 1998 FACULTY (etc. 1942-1980) Martin “Marty” Baskin (83) Monterey County Herald, CA Dec 1998 Marty Baskin, who served 38 years as a counselor and athletic director at Pacific Grove High School, died Monday [Dec. 7] of cancer at Alameda Care Center. He was 83. Born Jan. 18, 1915, in San Francisco, he graduated from Stockton High School and Stanford University, then moved to Pacific Grove to serve as high school athletic director from 1942 to 1963. Mr. Baskin earned a master’s degree from San Diego State University and was licensed as a marriage and family counselor. He returned to Pacific Grove High, where he served as a counselor from 1964 until his retirement in 1980, when he was honored by a mayor’s proclamation for his years of service to the school district. He was a charter member of the Pacific Grove Kiwanis Club and had received awards of recognition and commendation from the state Department of Parks and Recreation, the American Cancer Society, Salvation Army and the Retarded Children’s Association. He was instrumental in developing a food bank for the needy, which earned him the nickname “The Bread Man.” Mr. Baskin is survived by a son, Barry Baskin of Piedmont; twin daughters, Joyce Goldsmith of Richland, Wash., and Carol Frilich of Fresno; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of the Asilomar Conference Grounds. A luncheon reception will follow in the main dining hall of Asilomar. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family prefers that contributions in his memory be sent to the Hospice of the Central Coast, P.O.
